About Tremont and our staff
The Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont is a residential environmental education center located deep in the heart of the largest mountain wilderness in the east. Our "classroom" is 522,000 acres of forest, field, and stream of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Our students are children, adults, teachers, people of all ages and walks of life. Our classroom is equipped with such aids as live deer and bear, snakes, insects, giant hemlocks, wildflowers, mountain streams and thunderstorms, sunrises and snowflakes, full moons and the mystery of life on every hand!

Our program is dedicated to creating "environmentally literate" students who want to help preserve and protect places like the Smokies for the future. Whether they come as 5th graders for a week-long session of environmental school, or as adults to a weekend workshop on environmental education and the arts, our students are challenged to grow in their understanding and care of our earth and its cargo of life. Courses are experiential, stressing "hands-on" participation in learning. Our focus is on discovery and discussion, using important concepts as building blocks toward critical thinking skills. The curriculum is interdisciplinary, meshing elements of traditional disciplines in three-hour lessons such as "Life in the Forest" or "Explorations." Year-round offerings include: Elderhostels, teacher training weeks, backpacking courses, summer youth camps, and weekend to week-long adult workshops on topics from wildflowers to local culture and history.

The Tremont teaching staff who provides these programs is a small, dedicated team of people who are excited about environmental education, and want to gain practical experience in the field. They come to Tremont for the challenges and rewards of leading diverse educational programs in a wilderness setting. We expect our staff to be college graduates in an appropriate field of study, with experience leading groups, especially children. We desire staff who have a good natural history background, residential E.E. experience, outdoor and backpacking skills and first aid training. Enthusiasm, compassion, and a commitment to environmental education go without saying. Our staff teach in small groups of 12 to 15 students each and are expected to maintain a high standard of academic excellence. Living within Great Smoky Mountains National Park with the chance to totally immerse oneself in the environment here is precisely why many of our staff choose Tremont over other, more urban centers. We are committed to our staff, providing numerous training opportunities and an atmosphere that promotes personal and professional growth.
