Undeveloping Tremont -
A Vision for Future Site and Facilities

What is going on with our plans to re-design our site and facilities?

Many who have visited Tremont have learned about the master plan that we have developed and proposed to the National Park Service for improving our facilities and operations. In 2005 the park received the funding to conduct the Environmental Assessment needed to plan for new facilities in a National Park unit.

The Environmental Assessment (EA) is nearly complete. The EA involved gathering information and input from various stakeholders, developing several alternatives and studying the effects of those various options on park natural and cultural resources.

The preferred alternative (Alternative D) is estimated to be a $20 million project. NPS would provide $5 million and the Institute would need to raise the remaining $15 million. The Tremont board of directors has committed to raising the necessary funds for this project and we are working with NPS to obtain the necessary approvals to move forward.

Learn more about this project through the need statement as well as information about our objectives and proposed ideas on this project through the links to the right.

Current Projects

As we develop plans for “undeveloping” our site and facilities we desire to implement projects that demonstrate the principles of green design, sustainability, and high performance buildings. The following are projects that are in the works and should be a reality in 2008.

Solar array – We have the first level of approval from Alcoa Foundation to build a 2.5KW solar array near our office building. This demonstration project will reduce our carbon emission and energy use as well as educate people about the use of solar panels. A workshop on solar applications will be offered as a part of this project.

Science Center upgrade – Upgrades to our science room to be accomplished this summer will include, adding storage space, a sink, better workspace and some new equipment. Our contractor is working to recycle any waste materials and to use sustainable high performance materials including flooring made from recycled tires, insulation made from recycled denim, high energy value windows, T-8 lighting fixtures, eco-friendly paint, etc.

These improvements are being made possible with funding from the Alcoa Foundation.
