Students from 12 Schools Nominated for Science Seeker Scholarship

(Great Smoky Mountains) - Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont is proud to announce that 87 students from 12 schools and four states have been nominated for the Smoky Mountains Science Seeker Scholarship to attend Tremont’s Discovery Camp.

According to Jennifer Love, Tremont’s School Program Director, “Hands-on science activities provide an interface between nature and meaningful scientific pursuit, making science exciting and accessible.

“We give children the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature study, field science, cultural history and outdoor adventure through activities focused on the unique habitats and culture of Great Smoky Mountain National Park, ” continues Love.

Nominated by their teachers, these students have expressed an interest in science and natural history in the classroom and during their school visits to Tremont. These students will receive a $200 scholarship to attend Tremont’s 2008 Discovery Camp, a six-day, five-night residential summer camp for students aged 9-12. Nominees are also eligible for further financial aid to cover the remaining $235 cost of the camp.

“Tremont operates on the belief that long term, in-depth experiences are valuable,” states Ken Voorhis, Tremont’s executive director. “Our research as well as numerous other studies have shown that repeat in-depth experiences have long-lasting impacts so we want to build on the positive encounters that we have had with this select group of students. It’s quality versus quantity.”
