Aquatic Salamander Monitoring

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the Salamander Capital of the World, with higher diversity of salamanders than anywhere else of similar size (31 species). To monitor the salamander populations in Walker Valley, where Tremont is located, we have artificial salamander habitats, or Salamander Hotels, placed in five streams. Using a set protocol, students check each hotel for salamanders and identify, measure, and release any salamanders found. They also record several environmental variables, such as temperature and pH of the stream.  This project is one of Tremont’s longest studies, beginning in 1999.
