Dragonfly and Damselfly Inventory

While near water in the Smokies, you’ll often see these amazing, brightly-colored predators zooming around at high speeds. We are helping the park to learn more about what species exist here, their distributions, and their phenology. Some species can be identified on the wing with binoculars; others require capture. Students are involved in finding and capturing dragonflies and damselflies and in collecting some species for the park’s reference collection at Tremont. Thus far, 93 species of dragonflies and damselflies have been identified in the park.
