Lichens have captivated humans for a long time. These mysterious and diverse organisms have a fascinating life history, and they serve as a habitat for other bizarre organisms — including the beloved tardigrades, or water bears!

During this field-based course, you’ll spend the weekend delving into the enchanting world of lichens, learning their basic ecology, identification, and natural history.

This course will be taught by John DiDiego, Education Director and lifelong lichen enthusiast at Tremont, and Dr. James Lendemer, lichenologist from NY Botanical Gardens and co-author of Field Guide to Lichens of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This elective course is perfect for Southern Appalachian Naturalist Certification Program participants and graduates, as well as those who are simply interested in further developing their naturalist skills.

Cost: $420
Registration includes instruction, food, and lodging in our dorm inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
