SUMMARY:Southern Appalachian Ecology - Full
DESCRIPTION:Sorry\, this program is FULL. Please email mail@gsmit.org to be added to the waitlist.\nFor the first time\, we’re offering our popular Southern Appalachian Ecology class twice in one year. If you can’t make these dates\, check out the class in the fall. \nThe physio-geographic characteristics of the Southern Appalachian mountains have contributed to creating an amazing diversity of plant communities\, which\, in turn\, support an astonishing variety of organisms. In this course\, you will gain a deeper understanding of the mountains\, including the flora and fauna that call this place home – skills that can also be applied to your surroundings in any natural environment.   \nDuring this weekend\, you’ll learn about the ecology of the southern Appalachian mountains\, particularly as it relates to Great Smoky Mountains National Park\, through expert-led discussions and hands-on field trips to several unique forest habitats. Topics will include geological history\, plant community distribution\, how aspect\, elevation\, and moisture gradients affect distribution\, and an overview of plant communities with a focus on the major forest types. It’s going to be a fun-filled learning experience\, full of discovery and wonder. \n\nRegistration includes instruction\, food\, and lodging in our dorm inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  \nThis course is part of Tremont’s Southern Appalachian Naturalist Certification Program\, which consists of eight core courses. You have the option to enroll in individual courses or complete all eight to earn certification awarded by the University of Tennessee. \nAlready Registered? Check out the welcome letter for required readings\, a tentative itinerary\, and other essential details for your stay. \n\nCover photo by David Huff.
