Applications will soon be available for the 2021 John Thurman Smoky Mountain Trout Adventure Camp (formerly called the Trout Unlimited Great Smoky Mountains Trout Adventure Camp), for middle school-age girls and boys. The Tennessee Council of Trout Unlimited sponsors the program.

The John Thurman Smoky Mountain Trout Adventure Camp promotes an appreciation of cold-water conservation by teaching campers the sport of fly fishing in mountain streams. Activities include instruction from experts in fly casting, tying flies that attract fish, how to fish mountain streams, and fishing trips with experienced mountain stream mentors. Science-based activities that pertain to fishing in mountain streams include catching and identifying aquatic invertebrates that trout eat and how they are duplicated with flies used in fishing, live-trapping and identifying fish that live in Smoky Mountains streams, catching and identifying flying bugs that form part of a trout’s diet, and observing fish in their natural environment by snorkeling in a mountain stream. Recreational activities such as swimming, hiking, and fishing are also available.

Cost: $540

Financial assistance may be available through a camper’s area Trout Unlimited chapter—contact information for TU chapters in Tennessee is available on the Tennessee Council website.
