You have may noticed an increase in bird song recently as spring migration is in full swing with many different species passing through the Smokies! One awesome way to track bird migration is through Birdcast, a really useful project that uses radar to monitor bird migration and create forecast maps.
For most of Tennessee, peak migration is expected to occur between May 3rd and May 14th. Hundreds of millions of birds will be moving across North America each night during this peak season! One way we can all help these birds is by reducing the amount of light pollution at our homes and work. Unfortunately, birds are attracted to and disoriented by light pollution which can lead to increased collisions with buildings. Turning off your lights between 11:00pm and 6:00am throughout migration can make a huge difference!
