With the help of passionate volunteers and partner organizations, our annual Spring Open House on May 24 was a huge success. This year’s open house explored citizen science and community involvement at Tremont Institute and celebrated our 50th anniversary.

Tremont Institute 2019 Open House and Citizen Science Day participants

The open house was an official Citizen Science Day event in partnership with the Citizen Science Association. We connected nearly 100 visitors to up-close experiences with birds, butterflies, and salamanders. Participants also learned about opportunities to engage with their communities.

Not only did visitors hear firsthand about the many citizen science projects at Tremont by dedicated volunteers—from phenology, the process of documenting seasonal changes over time, to bird banding in national migratory studies—they were also introduced to fly fishing, Leave No Trace stewardship principles, Monarch butterfly migration, iNaturalist diversity observations, Knoxville AmeriCorps Community Action Committee, and so much more!

This year, Tremont Institute celebrates 50 years of connecting people and nature. We are grateful to all of the individuals, families, and organizations that have joined us in our mission of creating meaningful connections to the Great Smoky Mountains and fostering ecological stewardship in this region and beyond.

Here at Tremont we are humbled by the passion and dedication of so many of our community members joining us to promote a better understanding of our bioregion. We can’t wait to keep working with all of you!

If you weren’t able to attend our Citizen Science Day and open house celebration, we offer many more opportunities to get engaged. Summer camps, citizen science programs, naturalist courses, and many more opportunities can be found on our calendar.

Hope to see you all out in the woods soon,

Erin Canter
