TOWNSEND, TN — Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont named Peter “Pete” Crowley as Director of Operations beginning January 3, 2022.

Crowley most recently served as Principal at Crowley & Company, LLC, a consulting firm assisting real estate planning, property development, and facilities management. In his prior role, he worked at Scripps Networks Interactive (later acquired by Discovery) for over 20 years. During that time, he served as Senior Vice President for Building Operations and Senior Vice President of Property Development and Facilities Management, leading the strategic planning process to accommodate new staff as the company grew from 200 to over 3,000 employees globally.

“We are so excited to have Pete join our team,” said President and CEO Catey McClary. “His experience in facilities management, business continuity planning, and sustainable building practices make him an ideal candidate, and we’re looking forward to putting his skills to work on Tremont’s campus.”

Crowley’s appointment is timely, as Tremont staff plan for expansion to their Second Campus, a piece of property purchased in 2019 that sits on the border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Townsend. Crowley facilitated LEED Gold certification at Scripp’s headquarters in Knoxville, experience that will be helpful as Tremont aims to achieve the Living Building Challenge, a set of rigorous environmental and equitable building practices. Tremont’s Second Campus will help the nonprofit expand their work to provide nature-based, experiential education to youth and adults, while still maintaining their presence inside the national park.

“I’m looking forward to joining the team at Tremont and applying my professional experience to the daily operations of this outstanding mission-driven educational organization,” Crowley said. “I’m excited by the possibilities of the Second Campus as a Living Building Challenge campus to showcase effective sustainable development.”

Crowley grew up in central Kentucky, where he enjoyed outdoor sports and was active in scouting. He attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee and spent time in the Smoky Mountains before leaving to begin his career in New Mexico. Pete holds an undergraduate degree in Industrial Education and Technology from Murray State University and a Master’s Degree in Planning with concentrations in land-use and educational facilities planning from the University of Tennessee.

Crowley’s hobbies include running, hiking, and kayaking. He enjoys spending time with his family and is active in the Knoxville trail running community.
