Take your summer adventure off the beaten path with a six-day, five-night canoe expedition deep into the wild side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This program combines the excitement of backcountry camping with the thrill of real scientific discovery.

Campers will paddle to remote locations, set up camp under the trees, and spend their days exploring streams, coves, and hollows in search of biodiversity. Alongside Tremont’s naturalists, participants contribute to the All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory — an ambitious project led by Discover Life in America to document the estimated 60,000–80,000 species living in the Smokies. From butterflies and beetles to birds and plants, every discovery adds to our understanding of this extraordinary ecosystem.

And of course, it’s not all research. Days are filled with laughter, teamwork, and outdoor fun: swimming in clear water, cooking meals around the campfire, trading stories with new friends, and experiencing the independence that comes with true backcountry adventure.

This program is designed for teens who are curious, resilient, and eager to push themselves. With guidance from Tremont’s expert staff, campers gain skills in outdoor living, scientific observation, and group collaboration — while also building confidence and lasting friendships. Who knows? You might even be part of documenting a species new to the park — or even to science!
