Schoolyard Network Virtual Call: System Modeling
This year’s Schoolyard Network calls will focus on the NGSS Crosscutting Concepts as a lens to explore content across content areas. The crosscutting concepts have value because “they provide students with connections and intellectual tools that are related across the differing areas of disciplinary content and can enrich their application of practices and their understanding of core ideas.” (Framework, p. 233)
System modeling combines a Science and Engineering Practice (SEP) and a Crosscutting Concept (CCC), helping students define system boundaries, map internal components, and track energy and matter flows to explain scientific phenomena.
Join Tremont staff and other educators to explore animal tracks and signs. Participants will have the opportunity to go outside and find a track or sign, hypothesize how it got there, and build or draw the animal and tool(s) that could have made it.
You will first have the opportunity to participate as a learner and then debrief on ways you might bring the activity to life in your own grade level and content area.
Schoolyard Network meetings are free to attend! Join us virtually from 4:30 to 6:00 pm EST. Following each Schoolyard Network call, participants will receive a certificate documenting 1.5 hours of professional development.
If you haven’t already, be sure to join the Schoolyard Network. We’ll email all Schoolyard Network members with details to join this month’s session on the Monday prior to the event.
