The physio-geographic characteristics of the Southern Appalachian mountains have contributed to create an amazing diversity of plant communities, which, in turn, support an astonishing variety of organisms. In this course, you will gain a deeper understanding of the mountains, including the flora and fauna that call this place home – skills that can also be applied to your surroundings in any natural environment.

During this weekend, you’ll learn about the ecology of the southern Appalachian mountains, particularly as it relates to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, through expert-led discussions and hands-on field trips to several unique forest habitats. Topics will include geological history, plant community distribution, how aspect, elevation, and moisture gradients affect distribution, and an overview of plant communities with a focus on the major forest types. It’s going to be a fun-filled learning experience, full of discovery and wonder.
