Step off the beaten path and into the wild heart of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Teen High Adventure is Tremont’s most challenging youth program – a 10-day, 9-night outdoor adventure that pushes campers to discover both the beauty of the Smokies and their own inner strength.
For seven days and six nights, participants embark on a backcountry expedition, where they will backpack through remote terrain while carrying everything they need on their backs. They’ll climb ridges, ford streams, and fall asleep to the sound of mountain water instead of traffic or screens. Along the way, they’ll learn backcountry living skills, deepen their understanding of Leave No Trace ethics, and explore the plants and animals that thrive in the Southern Appalachians.
Before the trek, campers will begin their adventure with a trip to an obstacle-based climbing tower, where knowledgeable staff introduce them to trusting and supporting each other while facing a thrilling outdoor challenge. After the trek, campers return to Tremont for capstone experiences, including a day of whitewater rafting on a nearby river.
Teen High Adventure is demanding, and the rewards are immeasurable. Campers gain confidence, resilience, and independence, along with the knowledge and skills needed to plan and enjoy future wilderness trips. Supported by Tremont’s expert naturalists, campers leave knowing they are capable of more than they imagined – both in the outdoors and in life.
Before you register, we suggest reviewing this background information so you know what to expect. Campers can expect to hike an average of 8 miles per day (but a maximum of 12) while carrying a backpack weighing an average of 33 pounds. First-time backpackers are encouraged to consider registering for Wilderness Adventure Trek for a more introductory experience.
Registration includes food and lodging in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Please note: While we strongly believe that wilderness experiences lead to personal growth, Tremont is not structured to work with youth experiencing acute mental health crises and our programs should not be considered a substitute for wilderness therapy.
