Quick Draw FAQ: What to Know Before You Go

Who can participate?
Anyone age 14 or older! Whether you’re a beginner, hobbyist, or seasoned plein air painter, all are welcome to join the open division competition. Plein Air Smokies Featured Artists will compete in their own division, so you will see them out painting.

Do I need to register in advance?
Yes. All participants must register online by 11:59pm on Wednesday, September 24. No day-of registration will be accepted. Registration fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable.

When can we start painting? When do we have to stop?
Check-in will run between 7am and 9am. As soon as your canvas is stamped at check in, you are welcome to begin painting. The earlier you arrive, the more time you have to paint in the field. All paintings must be completed by 11am, and all must be returned to the judge’s tent framed and ready for display by 11:30am.

Where should I park?
Check-in and judging will take place at 1100 Cherokee Boulevard, near the ball fields at Sequoyah Hills Park. We’ll have signs up to point you in the right direction! There is ample parking at this location, though you may choose to move around the park to pick your painting location.

Where can I paint?
Anywhere at Sequoyah Hills Park or the Cherokee Boulevard median (out of the path of pedestrian and vehicular traffic). Once you check in and get your canvas stamped, you can head to your chosen spot.

What about weather?
This event is rain or shine! Please bring any necessary gear to keep you and your painting dry in the event of rain.

Can I sell my painting?
Yes! All paintings will be displayed for public viewing and sales at the judging tent starting at 11:30am. As the artist, you set the price for your piece. Artists receive 55% of the sale. Remaining proceeds support Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont’s environmental education programs.

What mediums are allowed?
You may work in watercolor, oil, pastel, acrylic, gouache, and charcoal. Choose what you’re most comfortable with—or what travels best!

What should I bring?

  • A canvas or panel to paint on
  • A frame for displaying your work at the 11:30am judging
  • Easel to paint on and display your work at the end
  • Your preferred art supplies (paint, brushes, palette, water or solvents, rags, etc.)
  • Portable chair or stool (optional but helpful)
  • Water bottle and snacks
  • Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
  • Layers or weather-appropriate clothing
  • Phone or watch to keep an eye on the time

Any tips for first-time participants?

  • Scout early: Arrive on time to find a spot that inspires you.
  • Travel light: Keep your setup simple and portable for ease of movement.
  • Think fast: This is about capturing the spirit of the scene, not perfecting every detail.
  • Frame ahead of time: Have your frame ready so all you need to do is pop your finished work in and return to the judging tent by 11:30 a.m.
  • Relax and enjoy: This event is as much about community and creative fun as it is about competition!
