Today marked a poignant reunion on Tremont’s campus as John Vanderplough and Hiroaki Ikeuchi, who first crossed paths here 50 years ago, walked together down memory lane. Amidst the rustling leaves and familiar sounds of the Middle Prong, they explored our campus where they first became friends. As they flipped through Tremont’s scrapbooks, a bittersweet picture emerged — Hiroaki shedding tears on the final day of their visit.

John and Hiroaki were part of Children’s International Summer Village (CISV) an organization that brings young people together from around the world to inspire peace and understanding. Hiroaki was 11, visiting from Japan, and John was the assistant director of the program. During the summer of 1972, their CISV group stayed on Tremont’s campus, doing much of what we continue to do during summer camps to this day – exploring the woods, swimming in the Middle Prong, getting creative through arts and crafts, and playing games – but they were also learning to transcend cultural and language barriers.

This heartwarming reunion underscores the enduring impact of Tremont beyond being a mere backdrop for summer adventures. It’s a place where friendships transcend time and where the beauty of nature serves as an extraordinary unifier. As we welcomed John and Hiroaki back after five decades, their journey serves as a reminder that Tremont isn’t just a place; it’s a catalyst for lifelong connections and the shared magic of exploring the world together.
