Bird Banding – Public Community Science Day
Tuesday, July 14 | 7-11am | Free
We appreciate your interest in joining a bird banding session with Tremont. This project helps us better understand our local bird populations, and provides an opportunity to connect with our bird friends. Participants will be able to shadow experienced volunteers and learn about bird conservation. Please bring weather-appropriate clothing, plenty of water, and snacks.
This event is free to attend, but registration is required. Donations to support Tremont’s ongoing community science and environmental education programs are recommended.
To ensure many different families and individuals can experience this opportunity, the maximum group size is 5. If you can’t make this date, please join us on Wednesday, July 22. Please only register for one date.
If you have already attended a banding session at Tremont, we encourage you to check out these opportunities:
- Participate in bird science with Cornell: Project Feeder Watch, Nest Watch, Great Backyard Bird Count, Merlin, eBird.
- Join a Christmas bird count in your area.
- Report hummingbird sightings to Journey North.
- Join a program at Seven Islands State Birding Park or Ijams.
Important considerations:
- We cannot safely band in windy or rainy conditions. Tremont’s Manager of Research will reach out 24-48h in advance to confirm the banding session.
- To ensure bird safety, only experienced volunteers will handle birds.
- We need to maintain low volume levels at the station to minimize stress for birds.
- Photos of birds in nets, flash photography, and videography are prohibited. Any photos posted online should note “all birds were safely captured, handled, and released under a federal research permit”.
- We are not guaranteed to catch birds.
