Book Discussion: The Unsettling of America

February 20, 2027 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm | Adults | Free

The Unsettling of America by Wendell Berry turns 50 this year. To mark the anniversary, we invite you to gather around the campfire at Tremont’s Townsend campus for an evening of conversation about the book’s enduring questions and what they mean today.

Writer and farmer Wendell Berry (1934-2026) spent decades examining the relationships between people, land, agriculture, and community. During this free discussion, we’ll revisit The Unsettling of America in light of issues still facing rural America, including our changing relationship with the land and the decline of small farms.

We encourage you to read the book before joining us, then come ready to listen, reflect, and share your own perspective in conversation with others.

This event is free, but registration is required. Donations are encouraged and help support Tremont’s educational programs.

Jeremy Lloyd

Jeremy Lloyd has been teaching courses in the Southern Appalachian Naturalist Certification Program almost since its inception in 2008. His enthusiasm for Appalachian forests and their inhabitants began in boyhood, blossomed when he began teaching in the Smokies, and deepened further while writing Forest Time: Footnotes to an Outdoor Education, which came out in 2026. He believes that ecology (the study of home) involves experiencing the landscape through the senses, heart, and mind in roughly equal measure.
