Schoolyard Network Virtual Call: Structure and Function

April 8, 2027 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

This year’s Schoolyard Network calls will focus on the NGSS Crosscutting Concepts as a lens to explore content across content areas. The crosscutting concepts have value because “they provide students with connections and intellectual tools that are related across the differing areas of disciplinary content and can enrich their application of practices and their understanding of core ideas.” (Framework, p. 233)

Structure and Function is a core Crosscutting Concept and Disciplinary Core Idea stating that the shape, makeup, and properties of an object or living system directly determine how it works and performs tasks.

Join Tremont staff and other educators to explore Adaptation T-charts – first exploring the adaptations essential to the survival of an insect and then applying them to our own strategies as educators. We’ll consider how the moves and decisions we make as educators affect the impact we have in our classrooms and schoolyards.

You will first have the opportunity to participate as a learner and then debrief on ways you might bring the activity to life in your own grade level and content area.

Schoolyard Network meetings are free to attend! Join us virtually from 4:30 to 6:00 pm EST. Following each Schoolyard Network call, participants will receive a certificate documenting 1.5 hours of professional development.

If you haven’t already, be sure to join the Schoolyard Network. We’ll email all Schoolyard Network members with details to join this month’s session on the Monday prior to the event.
