River Critters Puppet-Making Workshop with Cattywampus
Our friends at Cattywampus Puppet Council are hosting their annual people-powered Parade & Block Party in Knoxville on Sunday, May 17th at Suttree Landing Park. This year’s theme, Where the Waters Meet, celebrates water and aquatic biodiversity – and we invite you to join us in representing the Smokies.
Anyone is welcome to join Tremont’s parade group on May 17 — whether or not you attend the workshop. If you want to walk in the parade, please fill out this form and indicate that you are in a group – enter “Smokies” as the group name.
To prepare, Tremont is hosting a macroinvertebrate-themed puppet-making workshop on March 15 from 2–5 pm. We’ll begin along the Middle Prong, catching and examining macroinvertebrates up close and learning why these tiny river dwellers are such important indicators of water quality and ecosystem health. Then, with guidance from experienced artists, participants will create cardboard puppets that highlight the remarkable features of these aquatic critters.
Parade participation is not required to attend the workshop, but is encouraged! Please note that puppet-making involves the use of sharp tools; children are welcome with close adult supervision.
The event is free to attend, but registration is required. Donations are welcome to help cover event costs and support ongoing environmental education at Tremont.
